The large grocery store, Cash Wise Foods (1001 4th St. SE, St. Cloud, MN) has a surprisingly large array of natural, organic, gluten-free, and other dietary specialties, given that it’s essentially a traditional grocery store.  It is a large grocery store that happens to have a fairly large natural section in the front left part of the store.  Their prices are comparable with the other health food stores in the area, although it is just across the street from Fresh Thyme Market which makes for easy price comparisons or easier filling the gaps that either store has in their offerings.    

Coborns Grocery Stores, St. Cloud area and beyond

Various Coborns Grocery Stores have more or less natural items available.  There isn’t much rhyme or reason as to which have more or fewer organic offerings, although space and staff preferences seem to play a role.  Coborns has the same parent company as Cash Wise Foods, but tends to be more of a small town or larger neighborhood grocery store instead of the huge store feeling of Cash Wise.  As a result of the smaller nature of their stores, Coborns seems to have slightly higher prices than Cash Wise.  

However, when you need natural foods and don’t want to run into St. Cloud, the Coborns Grocery Stores that do carry natural grocery components are a blessing.  Here is a rundown of the more natural-oriented Coborns Stores, although it has been a while since I have been to some of them, so if you are in a pinch, call or check out your nearby Coborns to see if they can fill your needs.  

• Sauk Centre, Minnesota Coborns has a good variety of natural grocery options and is one of few places you can get a Kombucha within about a 30 mile radius.  
• St. Joseph, Minnesota seems to have quite a bit of natural foods as it is a newer Coborns store.
• Most St. Cloud area Coborns are relatively new and include natural foods options.

The Minnesota Street Market Co-Op (27 W Minnesota St, St. Joseph, MN) is a quaint, natural grocery store in the college town of St. Joseph. 

There are a surprising variety of natural, gluten-free and fresh produce options available given the smaller store space.  They use the space well and feature both grocery items as well as local artists’ paintings, pottery, and jewelry.  The store has a very home-like, comforting feeling with cozy wood floors (even if a bit noisy and somewhat sloping).  I love the atmosphere, even if there isn’t anything I need to buy at the moment.  It is always fun to shop there. 

Aldi

Aldi, located in St. Cloud and Alexandria, Minnesota among other locations, has a surprising variety of natural and gluten-free items.  Don’t overlook this store if you are looking for natural or special diet foods.  Aldi sometimes has an interesting variety of store brand options, but generally has pretty low costs overall.  This sometimes helps balance out the otherwise typically high cost of special diet and natural grocery expenses.     

Grain Bin of Alexandria, MN

The Grain Bin in Alexandria (4617 MN-29 #107, Alexandria MN (Phone 320-763-6876)) has a co-op feel although it seems to not be a formal co-op.  There are a surprising variety of options given the size of the store, although the store lanes are a bit narrow.  The staff are always knowledgeable and friendly.  It is always a pleasure to stop in for a visit.  

Brainerd Foods Co-Op

If you’re in the Brainerd area, be sure to check out Brainerd Food Co-op. This co-op offers a wide variety of organic and natural products, including fresh produce, bulk foods, and supplements.
