Lake Superior

No visit to Duluth is complete without seeing Lake Superior. There are lots of ways to view it.

Canal Park is an urban lakefront area in downtown Duluth at the base of the Superior Lift Bridge, home of the Lake Superior Marine Museum. It is also the location of the north and south pier lighthouses, a welcoming point for ships entering and exiting the Duluth harbor. If you time your trip right you may even be able to wave to the crew of a ship sailing into the harbor right in front of you. through the narrow port of entry and slipping under the elevated aerial lift bridge.

Duluth’s Lake Superior beaches are their own wonder. It is refreshing to watch big waves, seek the infamous Lake Superior Agate, or just stick your toe (or more) in the perennially cold Lake Superior (average temperature 40 degrees F). While it is a bit warmer in the summer, it is somewhat nippy year round, so be forewarned. It’s worth the chill most of the time, so brave the cold and stick in a toe (at the minimum).
